Edge Tuning Shopping List

Ever wondered what it takes to tune your own skis? This is my list of basic tools to get your skis in shape.

VICES

Pick something good. There aren’t tons of options for vices, but the last thing you want is your razor sharp ski moving on the bench. Get one with a clamp so that you can be sure your ski will be stable.

FILE

A decent medium cut file can go a long way. 12-14 teeth per cm will get you started. A finer file will only be of use if you decide you want to get into the details of edge tuning.

FILE GUIDES

Most tuners will only ever need a side edge file guide. Try to avoid the small plastic ‘pocket’ tools. These aren’t particularly accurate and can do some damage if used incorrectly. An 88* side edge guide from Swix or Sidecut will work for all recreational skiers. A base edge file guide is unnecessary unless you’re base grinding.

DIAMOND STONES

You only really need one medium grit diamond stone. The coarse and the fine are handy if you’re looking to get the most out of your tune but not necessary. Unfortunately, the colours of the diamond stones do not correspond to grit between brands.

GUMMY STONE

A fantastic tool for removing surface rust and detuning your edge. Everyone needs one of these.

Stay tuned for the tuning guide and the waxing shopping list.

Until the next run, Happy Skiing!
